Costumes and Gimmicks at Nanning Middle School Sports Meet in China

This looks like a lot of fun! Aren’t our high schools supposed to be the ones teaching creativity? Why aren’t we doing this? Looks like China is catching up with the West in other departments as well!

Free Book Marketing Podcast Series

Friesen Press seems to be a former small publisher that are currently marketing themselves as a service provider for self-published authors. It’s not a bad approach to the business of publishing, as the role of the publisher is rapidly changing, and as the e-book market is exploding with people who want to self publish but need varying degrees of help in getting their books out there.

Last night I came across their new podcast about book marketing for self -publishers, which I started to listen to today and found pretty informative. It made me think about a few approaches to marketing my future releases that I hadn’t considered and gave me ideas that I definitely intend to put into place. Yes, this podcast is ultimately a piece of marketing for Friesen Press, but there is more than enough meat there to make it worth a listen, and it’s also free, so you get what you pay for.

Mar 11, 2011: Japanese tsunami from the point of view of a car.

The experience of the Earthquake and following Tsunami from the point of view of a dashboard camera, you can even hear all the sounds as well. (Although luckily, it doesn’t include any human sounds like the car owner dying, I’m pretty sure the car is empty for most of the video.) What a harrowing experience just watching it, much less living it. You can see why it’s amazing so many people lived!

Walking the Gauntlet

Watch the video of Linda Katehi being escorted away from her office, it’s really creepy! As Tim Eldred pointed out, it’s like the final scene from The Birds in its subtle omniousness as you see the lines of silent students and photographers staring at her all around. It must have been quite a fightening experience for her. (Not that she may not have deserved it.)

Playtime is over! London’s first Go Tournament was a blast!

So, this weekend I ran a little thing called the Forest City Cup- London, Ontario’s very first Go tournament. We had 18 people turn out to play from as far away as St. Cathrines, and had a great time playing Go all day.

Well, I didn’t get to play, as I was too busy troubleshooting and organizing, but everyone else did. There were three organizers, and only two could play, so I volunteered to work instead of play. To give you an idea of how busy I was, when I got home I realized that in nine hours, I had only sat down a total of about 15 minutes. Still, it was all totally worth it, and so damn satisfying.

A little over a year ago, I was dreaming of a Go club in London, then I ended up being the organizer of our city’s largest club, and now I’ve also helped organize a whole bloody tournament! It’s funny where life takes you sometimes. 🙂
