Brass fixtures fight Bacteria and Spread of Germs.

Hmm. I might just have to have copper handles on the doors of my next home!

Plastic and stainless steel surfaces, which are now widely used in hospitals and public settings, allow bacteria to survive and spread when people touch them.

Even if the bacteria die, DNA that gives them resistance to antibiotics can survive and be passed on to other bacteria on these surfaces. Copper and brass, however, can kill the bacteria and also destroy this DNA.

Professor Bill Keevil, head of the microbiology group at Southampton University, said using copper on surfaces in public places and on public transport could dramatically cut the threat posed by superbugs.

Do people really love cats? Or are they actually compelled to by brain parasites?

So here’s a weird thought- Cat Lovers are Cat Lovers not always because they naturally love cats, but because they’re actually compelled to be close to cats by a parasite they’ve picked up which is affecting their brains. Scary, eh?

Impossible? Not at all, from the article:

Why is it that the elite French perfumers (known as “noses”) and sommeliers (“upturned noses”) of the world spend so much of their time inhaling cat effluvia from expensive glass bottles? A guess: It may have to do with a mind-control parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. The tiny protozoan may be getting into our brains and tricking us into liking cats—not to mention certain perfumes and wines.

In a recent study, Czech scientists gave men and women towels scented with the urine of various animals—horses, lions, hyenas, cats, dogs—which they rated for “pleasantness.” Turns out, men who tested positive for Toxo found the smell of cat urine more pleasant than men without Toxo. For Toxo researchers like me, this was a shock but not entirely surprising. Why? Toxo does approximately the same thing to rats.

BBC News – Kepler 22-b: Earth-like planet confirmed

Time to build that generation ship!

Astronomers have confirmed the existence of an Earth-like planet in the “habitable zone” around a star not unlike our own.

The planet, Kepler 22-b, lies about 600 light-years away and is about 2.4 times the size of Earth, and has a temperature of about 22C.

It is the closest confirmed planet yet to one like ours – an “Earth 2.0”.

However, the team does not yet know if Kepler 22-b is made mostly of rock, gas or liquid.

What News Anchors Do During Commercial Breaks

Watch the whole thing, it’s actually really impressive. Apparently this is a ritual that these two long-time co-workers have built up over time.

Live Action Ranma 1/2 Special will Air in December!

Akane Tendo

Apparently someone had decided to do a Live-Action Ranma 1/2 show in Japan, probably out of a mix of nostalgia and lack of ideas. I used to be a big Ranma 1/2 fan once upon a time, until it turned into an endless boring repetition of the same jokes and ideas, but it does have a great cast and fun core premise, so I look forward to seeing what they do with this. The actors look great for their roles, and I will definitely give this a look!

More information can be found here and more cast pictures here.

Still think Climate Change is a Hoax?

The only real question is, how long before we open port cities in the Northwest Territories, and how much will jobs there pay? Probably pretty well, actually!

COPENHAGEN, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Danish shipping company Nordic Bulk Carriers said it has saved a third of the cost and nearly half the time in shipping goods to China by taking advantage of receding Arctic ice to sail north of Russia instead of via the Suez Canal.

As the climate warms up and ice melts, many shipping companies are eyeing the Northern Sea Route as a way to cut voyage times and costs in the future.

Toronto Comic Book Shop Claims to Be World’s First for Kids

A new comic store focussed on kids has opened up in Toronto, which I think is a great idea. It’s ironic, I spent most of my teen years wishing people would treat comics as a general medium and not just as kids stuff, but now that comic companies seem to feel free to stuff their books with sex and graphic violence, I have started to feel superhero books are better suited to being a kids/young adult medium after all. Maybe they always were, and members of my generation who tried to force them to be something they’re not are the problem.

The Beguiling is a well-known Toronto comic book store (24 years in business) and its operators have decided to seize an untapped market and open a new comic book shop that caters exclusively to the under-12 set. Little Island Comics is specializing in kid-friendly titles, so parents don’t have to worry about their little comic book fans accidentally stumbling across graphic violence, nudity or other inappropriate content. Kids’ comic book authors are being tapped to make appearances and the staff are specially trained to interact with this younger demographic and parents.

Yeah, about that Nothing Goes Faster than Light thing? We may have made a mistake…

Well, this is potentiall exciting news! Way to go Einstein!

Puzzling results from Cern, home of the LHC, have confounded physicists – because it appears subatomic particles have exceeded the speed of light.

Neutrinos sent through the ground from Cern toward the Gran Sasso laboratory 732km away seemed to show up a tiny fraction of a second early.

Toronto strippers among ‘most intellectual’

On any given night, about 50% of the city’s exotic dancers on the job are fresh-faced college or university students who are shedding their clothes to earn degrees, industry officials say.

This came as actually no surprise to me at all. I had a friend who once told me the story that a group of escort services in Toronto wanted to have a Christmas party mixer for escorts and clients a few years back at a club near the University of Toronto.

The hookers rebelled and wouldn’t do it.

Why? Because they didn’t want to risk being outed- too many of them were students at U of T!
