Ahh Fall! When a young man’s thoughts turn to Fantasy!
Well, it’s true for me anyways. ^_^ For some reason when the weather starts to chill and the leaves start to turn colour I naturally develop a yearning for the Fantasy genre. Ever since I was young I have always been drawn to Fantasy in the Fall- by which I mean good ole Dungeons and Dragons; Lord of the Rings; Elves, Dwarves and Goblins Fantasy where the heroic group of adventurers use their own skills, talents and a little magic to overcome their foes in a pre-technological pseudo-medieval setting. Men are men, women are beautiful, and a bit of wit and a well-wielded blade can get you far. I think maybe it’s because I can feel my connection to nature the most at this time. The heady days of Summer are finished, the long Winter stands ahead, and each of us stands a step closer to the grave. Even though I was born in the Spring, I tend to measure life in terms of Autumns- does that make me a true born teacher? ^_- Who knows?
This leaning always naturally draws me to write fantasy stories, and that’s where it all tends to fall apart. (No pun intended!) I always get mired down in trying to figure out what kind of fantasy story want to write, what my characters will be, how magic works, and a million other little details. Perhaps that’s why the closest I’ve come to writing “true” Fantasy would be Little Gou adventures- those details are all laid out, it’s just grab the characters and go right to the storytelling part! No worldbuilding required because it’s ancient China and if the reader wants to know the setting that’s what wikipedia is for.
I think I will “worldbuild” and write a good fantasy story soon, in fact I had a great idea just the other week for a fairly original and entertaining story I’d probably turn into a book. (Although it might end up as a radioplay miniseries, who knows?) I doubt it will get written for a while though, too many other things on my plate right now. (Finishing the current semester at work, Twin Stars Book 2, Team Iron Angel’s new story, and finishing the long-delayed Little Gou audiobook. Ahhh…O_o! I should be writing that instead of this!) Still, if I manage to slip it in and find the time…Well, that’s a fantasy story right there, isn’t it?
